1967 Ford Fairlane 427 Lightweight

2877 Original miles

1967 Ford Fairlane 500XL “R” Code Light Weight with Race history.

We have for sale a completely restored 1967 Ford Fairlane 500 XL “R” Code 2 door hardtop.  This car is a true survivor of the most exciting years of Ford’s entries into the annals of drag racing.  Very few cars achieve the notoriety with a total year production of fewer than 75 vehicles equipped with the famous 427 dual four barrel equipped “R” engine option.   These cars were targeted to go to the most influential racers of the day.  Ford needed an answer to the tough Chevrolet 427 and Dodge/ Plymouth Hemi offerings at the time.  This is one of those “less than 75” original cars that qualified for NHRA and IHRA Super Stock racing that year!  According to the Marti report on this car, it was built on March 8th 1967 and is 1 of 72 made in that model year!

This car was purchased new by owner/driver Walter McIntyre of Lawndale, NC.  He raced this car from 1967 to 1971 and held several records with it.  He then stored the car until we bought it.  The buyer of this car will receive the race history and an original video of this car racing in 1967.  The odometer on this car read 2877 miles when we purchase it in January 2005.  That’s not a typo – yes the car has just 2877 miles on it!

From the time of purchase in 2005 till now this car has undergone a complete professional restoration.  This was not just a cosmetic or mechanical restoration but a COMPLETE restoration down to the last possible detail.  This car is 4 years in the making and is now in many ways even better than the day it was built at the factory.  The restoration utilized as many original parts and assemblies as possible but where a replacement was required all NOS original parts were used wherever possible.

A few important details about the car:

Engine/Drive train:  NOS (yes - New Old Stock) original 427 engine block with correct date code.  This engine is standard bore /standard stroke/ standard everything.  This is not a tired old race or marine motor with a few sleeves thrown in for good measure.  We actually found a brand NEW block – never in a car.  Compression ratio on the NOS medium riser heads is set to stock.  The dual quad intake manifold is also NOS.  The carbs on the car now are rebuilt and run perfect – the original carbs have been re-plated and rebuilt AND COME WITH THE CAR.  The exhaust manifolds are the originals. The exhaust system is all new and is aluminized steel.  We added electronic cut-outs to remind ourselves every now and then how a real 427 ford sounds.

The correct 4 speed toploader transmission has been rebuilt to new. That included new bearings, gears and seals.  The shifter is factory original and in excellent condition.

The rear end is original and has everything new and rebuilt with a 3.89 gear ratio.  Everything in the rear end is either new or rebuilt.

The radiator has been re-cored and is like new.

The gas tank is original with a new sender.

The brakes are all new with all new parts and hardware.

The suspension, steering, shocks and springs are all new.

Body:  The body has been completely disassembled and all rust, dents or dings have been professionally restored.  The body on this car is extremely straight and in better than factory new condition.  After exhaustive blocking and preparation the car was painted its original T code Candy Apple Red. It was painted with PPG concept System Acrylic urethane for a professional show quality finish.  Almost all trim parts including aluminum trim and grille are NOS parts.  Both front and rear bumpers are originals that have been re-chromed.

The car comes with 5 new stylized wheels with F70-14 wide oval tires.   There is also a set of vintage Crager wheels with competition 4” Protrack 4” tires for the front and P235-60 10” Protrack steel wheels for the back.  These are the very same setup you see on the car with the history pictures when it was racing back in the 60’s.

The hood is factory original and is not a reproduction.  It is in excellent condition and fits well.

Interior:  Factory original. All in very good to Excellent condition overall.  New headliner and carpets have been installed.  Overall the dash, instrumentation and controls are in excellent condition and original.  The original factory Sun Super tachometer has been rebuilt and re-plated.  All  instrumentation and electrical works as new.  The car was equipped with a radio and it is also working as well.

The restoration and re-assembly of this car took over 4 years.  The net result is an outstanding example of extreme patience for perfection.  This car runs and drives as well as it looks.  In every case it is as good as or better than a new one.  Most vintage offerings of this category of vehicle do not have the inclusion of important history with the vehicle.  This car really has it all.

We invite you to see this car in person.  You can schedule an appointment to see the car at a mutually convenient time by emailing me at  sales@oldtimeclassics.com   Seeing is believing and we believe once you see this beautiful piece of drag racing history you will want to add to your collection.
